About the Centre

The Centre for Soft Matter & Bioengineering (CSMBE) is a newly established interdisciplinary research centre at KIIT Deemed to be University and one of the COIR initiatives dedicated to advancing innovation and research. Led by the Schools of Chemical Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Centre brings together expertise from multiple schools across KIIT to pursue both fundamental and translational research in soft matter and bioengineering.

The Centre focuses on integrating soft materials with biological systems to develop advanced functional materials, biomedical technologies, and sustainable engineering solutions. Soft matter—such as polymers, gels, colloids, and complex fluids—forms the basis of many living systems, including cells and tissues, making its study essential for innovation in bioengineering. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, CSMBE addresses key challenges in environmental sustainability, advanced materials and healthcare.

Beyond research, the Centre promotes academic excellence through research-led education, interdisciplinary training, and enriched learning opportunities for students.

Our Objectives

  • To advance fundamental understanding of soft matter systems, interfaces, and biological processes.
  • To foster interdisciplinary collaboration across physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and medicine.
  • To develop translational technologies for sustainable environments, health-related applications, and diagnostics.
  • To build strong partnerships with industry to enable technology transfer and commercialization.
  • To offer interdisciplinary B.Tech/M.Tech/Master’s and PhD programs, along with workshops, certification courses, and outreach activities to develop skilled human resources.
